I started playing basketball my freshman year at William Penn High School, and I was horrible. My athleticism and quickness earned me a spot on the varsity basketball team. Making the team was one of the proud moments in my high school career.
I started every game because of my athleticism, defense, and determination. Scoring was not a priority for me, defense was my game and it resulted in easy lay ups. I eventually developed a set shot during my sophomore year at William Penn and became somewhat of a scoring threat my junior year. Most of my points were initiated from defense, the rest were from set shots (thanks team for getting me the ball).
There were some lower level division 1 schools interested in recruiting me towards the end of my senior year at William Penn. I decided to stay in Philadelphia and therefore went to Drexel University. My game really developed at Drexel under the guidance of Dale Hodges (Thanks Dale). She worked with me after every practice on ball handing, shooting, driving, and defense. It wasn’t until the end of my freshman year that I picked up a little handle and mid-range jump shot. It was that year that I perfected my left-handed lay-up as well. Defense was still a huge part of my game, but by my sophomore year, I became an offensive threat and was able to take my defender off the dribble to the hole.
After college, I played 2 years of semi-pro basketball. The seasons were short, but I got a chance to play against some really good female basketball players, including 4 WNBA stars. I even manage to hold a scoring record for 2 years (35pts)—go figure.
Basketball is one of my greatest joys and I only wish I were really, really good at it. I am not the greatest female basketball player in the world but I play to compete, to win, and to have fun.
So… now you know a little about me, now come join me in game of pickup.
